Ginger Rogers in the first performance of George and Ira Gershwin's song, "They All Laughed", from 1937. I especially enjoy hearing this version because it has Gershwin's wonderful orchestration. A bit later, it is repeated as a virtuoso dance number with Fred Astaire. I included that as well.
Renata Tebaldi sings Mimi's aria, "Si mi chiamano Mimi", from Puccini's opera "La Boheme". This is from a special concert in Rome on November 29, 1954, the 30th anniversary of Puccini's death.
This is the only live performance of the Liebestod I know of with these two artists. I find it more compelling than the famous studio version they did some years later for EMI.
Deanna Durbin at age 17. From the movie "First Love". Durbin, in a movie adaptation of Cinderella, charms all at the ball by singing a song based on the waltzes of Johann Strauss, Jr. The beguiled young prince is Robert Stack in his first film role.
Kirsten Flagstad sings the Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde. This time the microphones are better than in the earlier recordings I've posted, and the singing is beautiful!
Deanna Durbin, at age 17, sings the popular song "Amapola" by Joseph LaCalle, from the movie "First Love". "First Love" is a wonderful movie adaptation of Cinderella. Deanna Durbin as a modern day (well, 1930s modern) Cinderella is quite charming - this is one of her very best movies.
